Post Thanksgiving with Candace, Lewis, Alex & Sparky

Well, another Thanksgiving has come & gone. Who doesn't love the smell of a turkey cooking !
As I mentioned earlier, Lewis got our Thanksgiving meal at Whole Foods. Everything was already cooked. All we had to do was re-heat the 11-pound turkey. It was delicious. And there's enough leftover to make lunches & soup.

It's Sunday afternoon. I'm simmering the bones right now to make a stock, then I'll finish it off with vegetables & by adding more of the turkey in the refrigerator. Can't wait to eat it. It was very moist. Whole Foods' turkeys are organic - no preservatives or steroids. We made sure Sparky had a nice turkey dinner on Thanksgiving too. She eats hers much faster than we do though.

I went back to work on Friday since I'd been off for so many days to go to Virginia. I was probably 1 of 6 people working that day. But I got a great parking spot. That never happens! There was only 1 other person working in my department. I really got a lot done. Came home an hour early & then we all left for the concert.

The night after Thanksgiving was the Van Halen concert. Wow! All I can say is WOW ! I can't believe I've never seen them in concert before. They all 4 looked like they were having such a good time -- laughing, joking. Genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves. There was Eddie on the guitar - master that he is; Alex on drums - no less than incredible, especially during his solo; David Lee Roth as front man once again, looking a touch older with shorter hair but no less enthusiastic than ever; and then the new guy, Eddie's 16-yr old son Wolfgang Van Halen on the bass replacing Michael Anthony. They all looked very "fit" as well. Eddie had a stint in rehab earlier this yr for "unspecified" reasons, but my guess is alcohol. He was always an alcohol guy. But he sure looked good Fri night. Looked completely clean. They all did. Very refreshing to see that. We tried taking pictures at the concert with my phone, but it didn't work. We were only 3 sections back from the stage, but a camera phone is not the best tool for that type of thing - especially with the lighting changing colors constantly.

Seemed like they all really enjoyed themselves & put on one hell of a show for us for 2 hours. No one in all of Jobing.com Arena sat down for a second of their 2-hr performance. Even Alex had a good time. He's been requesting to opt out of going to concerts with us lately so we decided this would be the last one for him because he didn't seem to enjoy Jethro Tull a few months ago. But he did like the Queen concert last yr. Oh well. Who knows what a 14-yr old will like from day to day? ! But he did like this show. Who wouldn't !

We arrived at the stadium area a few hrs early so we could find a place to have dinner. Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville had opened a wk earlier so we thought we'd try it. The place is huge. Nice patio, very atmospheric. The food left a lot to be desired. Seemed like more of a novelty place than a serious food place, but it really was fun. We got there just at the right time -- Margaritas were discounted as were appetizers. And you can NOT go to Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville without having a margarita. We had several hrs before driving home so we thought we'd go for it. They use Cuervo Gold in their standard, house margaritas. Not too bad for a house.

Outside, in the courtyard area between the restaurants, shops & the arena was a huge fountain area - dancing fountains - & a band called Metalhead that played lots of Def Leppard, Ozzie, Guns 'N Roses, AC/DC, & - well, you get it -- metal. They were really good. It was a free Metalhead party from 4pm to 8pm. So after dinner we hung around outside & enjoyed the band & the fountain & the wonderful weather. All the Christmas decorations were up & there were over 20 decorated Christmas trees all around the plaza. It was very pretty & colorful.

The next morning, Sat, I took Alex to his school for basketball practice only to find out there wasn't any. He told us it had been changed to Friday, but we didn't believe him because my schedule said Sat. I thought he got his days confused, so we didn't take him on Fri. When I took him on Sat, the lights were out & there wasn't a single car anywhere near the school. Oops. Sorry, Alex. We believe you now.

When we got home he said he would like to go see his grandma, so I called my mom & took him over there to spend the night with her. Later that night Lewis & I went out to dinner at Carlsbad Tavern & then to the Comedy Spot with our chavarah. Dinner was really good. Carlsbad Tavern is a fun place. Nice entrance with a lagoon & beautiful waterfall. Lots of outdoor seating, but it was a little too cold for that last night -- for us, anyway. There were lots of other (crazy) people sitting outside.

After dinner we went to the Comedy Spot. There were 4 acts prior to the headliner, Randy Kagan who writes for Late Late Night with Craig Ferguson. Never saw that show. Someone told me Craig Ferguson is the guy who played Mr. Wick (the boss) on the Drew Carey Show. Randy Kagan was hilarious. I won't tell you any of his jokes in case you plan on seeing him. If you don't plan on going, Google him. There are a couple of video clips of his act. I laughed so hard my jaw was hurting by the end of the night. We had reserved a table for 8, but they gave us 2 booths for 4 each next to each other. The guys sat at one & the ladies at the other. For some reason, Randy Kagan kept referring to the guys' table as the gay guys. Guess he didn't see their wives next to them. It was great!

So there you have it. Thanksgiving & after. Van Halen & Randy Kagan. Candace making turkey soup & Alex not practicing basketball. Have to go to my mom's soon to pick him up. In the meantime, I need to tend to the soup which is going to be DELICIOUS. I think I will take some to work with me tomorrow too.

Hope your holiday was as nice as ours was.

Hugs,

Candace
